SGPT

The test measures the quantity of Serum Glutamic-Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT), an enzyme, in a patient’s blood. However, high levels may point to liver damage or disease. This procedure is usually used for diagnosing and monitoring liver conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Technically speaking, collecting some blood from a vein on your arm will do when it comes to the SGPT testing method. The laboratory is then responsible for carrying out other tests that will help them in determining how much of this drug has been taken up by your body tissues over time. 

The level of the enzyme SGPT in blood is usually measured by the SGPT test. It indicates liver

disease or damage when it is present at higher levels in the blood. Different health conditions such as

cirrhosis, hepatitis or cancer of liver can lead to high levels of this enzyme. 

SGPT test is usually given if a person has symptoms that are suggestive of liver problems which

include: 

1. Yellow discoloration of skin and eyes (jaundice) 

2. Fatigue 

3. Loss of appetite 

4. Nausea and vomiting 

5. Abdominal pain 

Additionally, some physicians may order this test as routine check-up or other reasons among patients with known chronic liver diseases.

The SGPT test is usually safe and without any risk. Nevertheless, as in any blood drawing

procedure there are some minimal risks such as: 

1. Bruising or swelling where the needle went in 

2. Infection at the needle site 

3. Nerve damage from the needle 

Limitations of this test are: 

1. The test may not pick up liver disease early on. 

2. Increased levels of SGPT can be due to other conditions like muscle injury or celiac disease. 

3. It might not distinguish between different types of liver diseases. 

For the SGPT test, there is only one parameter that has to do with SGPT enzyme concentration in blood. This level is measured in units per litre (U/L). 

Medical practitioners search for high levels of SGPT indicating liver damage or malfunctioning. Age and underlying ill health problems affect these findings.

The test for SGPT is advised to be undertaken by the following: 

1. Persons with liver disease’s signs 

2. Individuals who have experienced liver diseases in their past 

3. Those with family history of liver diseases 

4. People who drink heavily or use injectable drugs 

The test can be used to check if one has a liver disease during its early stages where treatment is easier. It also checks if people with it are getting better or worse. 

The main conditions that can be diagnosed through SGPT test include: 

1. Hepatitis 

2. Cirrhosis 

3. Liver cancer 

4. Fatty liver disease 

5. Chemical and medication-induced liver damage 

To prepare yourself for an SGPT test: 

Fast between 8-12 hours before undergoing the test. 

Inform your doctor about any drugs you are using. 

Avoid heavy exercises prior to testing procedures. 

Refrain from eating a big meal just before the tests.
