BILIRUBIN TOTAL, DIRECT & INDIRECT-(DPD)

Total Bilirubin Test is a straightforward blood check that determines the quantity of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is the yellow-coloured substance formed when old red blood cells undergo breakdown. The processing of bilirubin is largely performed by the liver, so it is not surprising that high concentrations of this substance often suggest some disorders of the liver, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. This test helps to diagnose and follow conditions of the liver and other diseases, which tend to raise the level of bilirubin above normal. 

Total Bilirubin Test focuses on measuring the total bilirubin levels in the body that consists of both indirect and direct forms. Unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin is a type produced in the body that has not been processed by the liver. Conjugated (direct) bilirubin is the type that has already been processed by the body’s liver and is ready for excretion.

Procedure for taking the test: A medical staff will take a blood sample from a patient’s arm vein with a needle and syringe.
